Mastering Blood Sugar Testing 123: Have You Got the Essentials Down?
People with diabetes usually use a blood glucose meter to monitor their blood sugar, and sometimes they find that the data fluctuates more than usual. Don’t panic too much first, see if there is something wrong with the sugar test.

Before the test-take blood correctly

• People with diabetes should clean their hands thoroughly before testing their blood sugar. After drying, prepare blood collection needles, blood collection pens, test strips and blood glucose meters;

• Then use 75% alcohol to disinfect the blood-drawing finger, and keep the arm hanging down for 30 seconds to ensure that a large amount of blood flows into the fingertip. After disinfection, alcohol will remain at the blood-drawing site. You should wait for the alcohol to completely evaporate before collecting blood;

• When collecting blood, first warm and massage your finger to enhance blood circulation. The amount of bleeding should be moderate and flow out naturally. If too little blood is collected, the measurement results will be low or failed. Too much blood collection will also affect the measurement results.

Under test-reasonable control

• Note that the blood glucose meter must purchase ISO-certified products and be used in an environment with a humidity of 20%-80% and a temperature of 10℃-40℃. The blood glucose meter should not be too close to the electromagnetic field;

• If it is a blood glucose meter that requires coding adjustment, after turning on the main switch of the blood glucose meter, adjust and check the code to ensure that it is consistent with the code of the test strip currently in use;

• Note that the test paper should be kept dry, protected from light and sealed. Use the test paper immediately after taking it out. Tighten the cap of the test paper bottle immediately after taking out the test paper to prevent moisture;

• Pay attention to the expiration date of the test paper and do not use expired blood glucose test paper;

• Blood collection needles are disposable and cannot be used multiple times. Bacteria are more likely to multiply on used blood collection needles, thus endangering your health.

Post-test-scientific analysis

In addition to being affected by physical conditions, blood sugar levels are also affected by emotions, diet, exercise and medications. Blood sugar levels are constantly changing throughout the day, so the blood sugar levels measured each time will be different.

If you have any doubts about the test results, you can test 2-3 times continuously at the same time. If the results are very different, review and check whether the test steps are correct.

If the test steps are correct but the blood sugar result is still high or low, you should seek guidance and help from medical staff in time.
