[Chinese Medicine]learning experience (57) Huanglian Ejiao Decoction

By tianke  •  0 comments  •   4 minute read

The notes I compiled are based on the textbook "Prescriptions" of the University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and some prescriptions that I think are good. The prescriptions written are all my personal experience, and the analysis methods are mainly based on the six meridians and the viscera. I am not a medical professional, studying medicine is purely a hobby. It is normal if there are mistakes in the text.

(57) Coptis donkey-hide gelatin soup
[Source] "Treatise on Febrile Diseases"

【Category】Zang-Fu heat agent

[Composition] Coptidis four liang (12g), scutellaria baicalensis two liang (6g), peony two liang (6g), chicken yellow two pieces (2 pieces), donkey-hide gelatin three liang (9g)

[Usage] Add the five flavors, use six liters of water, boil the three ingredients first, take two liters, remove the dregs, simmer the inner gelatin, cool it down, the inner chicken is yellow, stir to get it, take it warm for seven times, take three times a day (modern usage: decoct in water, melt the donkey-hide gelatin, and stir the chicken yellow).

【Function】Nourishing yin and lowering fire, eliminating annoyance and calming the nerves.

【Indications】Yin deficiency and hyperactivity of fire, heart and kidney disharmony syndrome. Upset and insomnia, dreaminess and forgetfulness, dry mouth and throat, soreness of waist and knees, red tip of tongue, thready pulse.

This prescription is listed in the "Tranquilizer" in the college textbooks. I personally oppose it very much. It is like Liu Bei letting Pang Tong be the county magistrate, and Liu Bang sending Han Xin to manage food and grass.

According to the textual research of medical historians, Huanglian Ejiao Decoction is likely to be the "Zhuque Decoction" lost in "Treatise on Febrile Diseases". In "Fu Xing Jue", this prescription is called "Xiao Zhu Bird Soup". After all, "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" is a bamboo slip that was sorted out after being scattered. No one can guarantee whether Xiao Zhu Bird Tang is included in the original work, but 99.99% of "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" should have a Zhuque Tang, and this Zhuque Tang is probably Huanglian Ejiao Tang.

Suzaku, the southern mythical beast, belongs to fire, lives in the palace, and belongs to Jing ghost Liuxing Zhang Yizhen and Qixingsu. How could a prescription with such an awesome name be just a tranquilizer? Moreover, all the prescriptions related to the four gods and beasts in "Treatise on Febrile Diseases" are all magical prescriptions.

The heart is fire, the kidney is water, and the liver is wood. Kidney water nourishes liver wood, and liver wood nourishes heart fire. If the kidney water is deficient, the wood will be weak, and if the wood loses water, it will be tyrannical, and the fire will burn in the heart. The heart belongs to the viscera of fire, the most afraid of water and the most fond of water. If there is liver wood to send kidney water to nourish, then the heart fire will not be hot, and the water and fire will be relieved. If the kidney water is deficient, the fire of the phase fire will be inflamed, and the fire of the heart will be blazing. The two fires of the monarch and the prime minister are in harmony, just like Hu Hai and Zhao Gao are in power, and it will cause a lot of misfortunes.

Although the heart is a fire organ, it is also most afraid of fire disturbance. The heart governs the gods, and the gods live in the heart. If the heart is disturbed by fire, the mind will be restless, if the mind is not peaceful, the yang will not enter the yin, and if the yang does not enter the yin, how can it be possible to fall asleep?

In the prescription, Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis chinensis are used to clear away the fires of the heart, lungs, liver, gallbladder, stomach and large intestine. White peony root and donkey-hide gelatin nourish the deficiency of yin and blood. Chicken yolk is egg yolk, which enters the heart and kidney meridians, and has the effect of nourishing yin and moisturizing dryness. The combination of the five medicines can treat the syndrome of blood deficiency and excessive fire, and calming the nerves is only one of the effects.

An excerpt from the net:

A certain woman, 28 years old. Half a month ago, she bled profusely during childbirth and had persistent postpartum fever (between 37.9-38.8°C). Western medicine was ineffective. Acute diagnosis: dizziness, pale complexion, palpitation, spontaneous sweating, tinnitus, backache, constipation, yellowish urine. Red tongue, thready pulse. This is a newly delivered woman, the yin and blood are dying violently, and the yang is unattached and the outside is hot. Card belongs to hyperactivity of fire due to deficiency of YIN, and treatment should nourish yin and lower fire.

Prescription: Coptidis 6g, cinnamon 2.1g, scutellaria baicalensis 9g, white peony root 9g, chicken yellow 2 pieces, donkey-hide gelatin 9g (melted). After 3 doses of decoction, the heat gradually subsided.

Many books say that Coptidis Ejiao Decoction belongs to Shaoyin Heat Transformation Syndrome. In this regard, as a junior student and amateur, I reserve my personal opinions, and I will neither comment nor participate in the discussion.
