The survey was jointly conducted by the Affiliated Hospital of Peking University, Kaohsiung Ruan General Hospital, and the Institute of Medical Biotechnology of Chang Gung University. Qiu Zhongfeng, director of the Department of Radiation Oncology of Peking University, said that the occurrence of liver cancer is related to hepatitis, but they speculate that it may be related to the absorption of heavy metals in the environment. The survey results showed that among the 46 liver cancer patients, 97% of the hair detected at least one toxic substance, and these toxic substances were most common with high levels of mercury and arsenic, accounting for 60.9%; followed by aluminum, which accounted for 23.9%; Tin accounts for 21.7%.
The study also found that the iron content in these patients with liver cancer was generally abnormal. About 60% of the hair was found to be "high iron", and a protein that binds to iron was generally low. Therefore, the research team set out to compare the iron/protein in the blood of patients and ordinary people. Ratio (I/Co ratio). The results showed that the number of patients with this value was greater than 1000, more than 47%, and only 1.4% of the general population was higher than 1000.
Qiu Zhongfeng pointed out that they are currently conducting the next stage of experiments to clarify the clear correlation between liver cancer cells and heavy metals. Perhaps in the future, people can grasp the risk of liver cancer by giving a hair to a doctor.
As for the discovery of the I/Co ratio, Qiu Zhongfeng said that this value can be seen in general blood draws, so the public and doctors can refer to it now, and have more confidence in the results of liver cancer screening.
