In my country, where currently two-thirds of diabetic patients struggle to maintain adequate blood sugar control, achieving stable glycemic control requires a comprehensive approach. Below are seven powerful strategies that can greatly aid in managing diabetes effectively:

  1. Optimistic Mental Attitude Developing a positive mindset and building confidence to manage diabetes is paramount. Emotional stability and a right perspective towards the condition are essential, as prolonged stress, anxiety, and depression can contribute to increased blood sugar levels. Those with diabetes who also suffer from depression or anxiety tend to have worse outcomes. Remember, though diabetes is incurable, diligent and consistent management can lead to stable blood sugar levels and a fulfilling life.

  2. Healthy Dietary Habits A well-balanced diet is key for diabetics. Adhering to the principles of a balanced diet, patients should aim for a diverse range of foods while controlling overall caloric intake. One-third of the diet should consist of whole grains and legumes. Include a wide array of colorful vegetables and moderate servings of fruit. Consume fish frequently, moderate amounts of poultry and eggs, and limit processed meats. Daily servings of dairy and beans are encouraged, along with wise snack and meal selections. Stay hydrated and minimize alcohol consumption.

  3. Regular Physical Activity Engaging in routine exercise is crucial for diabetes management. Aim for at least 30 minutes of exercise every other day, with a weekly goal of 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activities such as brisk walking. Consistency is key to realizing optimal health benefits.

Self-Monitoring Routinely checking blood sugar, blood pressure, and blood lipids enables patients to promptly detect changes in their condition and adjust their diet, exercise regimen, and medication accordingly. Home monitoring of blood glucose and blood pressure, tracking weight and waist circumference, and performing regular foot examinations and care are essential. Schedule regular check-ups at the hospital for tests such as liver and kidney function, blood lipids, eye exams, and urine microalbuminuria to assess the presence of complications.

  5. Compliant Medication Use Under a doctor’s guidance, establish a rational treatment plan and stick to it. Avoid stopping or altering medications based on misconceptions that they might harm the liver or kidneys. Compliance with prescribed medication is vital.
