Drugs whose main functions are to unblock water channels and seep out water and dampness, and are often used to treat the syndrome of internal water-dampness, are called medicines for diluting water and expelling dampness.

This type of medicine tastes mostly sweet and bland or bitter, and is mainly directed to the bladder, small intestine, kidney, and spleen meridians. Its effects tend to be downward. The bland ones can penetrate and benefit, while the bitter ones can reduce diarrhea. This type of medicine has the effects of diuresis and swelling, diuresis and stranguria, diuresis and jaundice reduction.

The diuretic and dampness-removing medicines are mainly used to treat various diseases caused by water-dampness such as edema, difficulty in urination, diarrhea, phlegm, stranguria, jaundice, eczema, vaginal discharge, dampness and warmth. When using diuretic and dampness-removing drugs, the corresponding drugs must be selected according to different disease syndromes, and the appropriate combinations must be made.

Drugs for promoting diuresis and expelling dampness are easy to consume and damage body fluid. They should be used with caution or should not be used for patients with yin deficiency, less fluid, kidney deficiency, nocturnal emission and enuresis. Some drugs have strong tonic effects and should be used with caution by pregnant women.

According to the differences in properties, efficacy and indications of diuretic and dampness-reducing medicines, they are divided into three categories: diuretic and swelling medicines, diuretic and strangury medicines, and dampness-reducing jaundice medicines.

Diuretics

The nature and flavor of this type of medicine are mostly bitter and cold, or sweet and mildly cold. Bitterness can reduce diarrhea, coldness can clear away heat, and can remove dampness and heat in the lower Jiao. It has the main function of diuresis and treating stranguria, and is mainly used to treat hot stranguria, bloody stranguria, stone stranguria, and ointment stranguria. In clinical practice, corresponding diuretic and stranguriant drugs should be selected according to the condition and appropriately mixed to improve the efficacy.

Tongcao

It was first recorded in "Supplementary Materials of Materia Medica".

This product is the dried stem pith of Araliaceae plant Tongtuomu. The smell is slight and the taste is light. The one with white color is better. raw use.

[Medical properties] Sweet, light, slightly cold. Returns to the lung and stomach meridians.

[Efficacy] Clear away heat, diuresis, ventilate and release milk.

【application】

1. Damp-heat stranguria syndrome, edema and oliguria

This medicine is sweet in taste, cold in nature and light in body. It is used in Taiyin Lung Meridian to reduce heat and facilitate urination. It can relieve stranguria and reduce swelling. It is especially suitable for dysuria caused by hot stranguria, astringent and painful stranguria, stone stranguria, bloody stranguria, edema and oliguria due to stoppage of water and dampness.

2. Lack of breast milk after childbirth

This product enters the stomach meridian and relieves gastric qi up to the point of lactation. It has a sweet and light taste and is mostly used for postpartum lactation problems.

In addition, this product can be used to treat symptoms such as the onset of dampness and heat, dampness due to summer heat, headache, aversion to cold, body weight pain, limb fatigue, chest tightness, lack of hunger, and afternoon fever.

[Others] Tongcao and Akebia have different names and different smells. But today's Acutellaria baicalensis is called "Tongcao" in ancient books. Today's Tongcao is called "Tongtuomu" in ancient books. Know the difference and don't confuse them.

In addition, Tongcao is the dried stem pith of Himasan jingle flower, Chinese jingle flower, or the green pod leaves of Dogwood family. Its nature, flavor, meridians, efficacy, main diseases, usage and dosage are similar to Tongcao, and it is also used as Tongcao in some areas.
