How serious is HIV infection among drug addicts? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the Department of Health recently received a report that five members of a family were infected with HIV one after another within a year due to sharing needles. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently cooperated with the non-governmental organization Chenxihui to establish the first AIDS drug rehabilitation village in China that specializes in helping AIDS drug addicts.
The World Health Organization designated December 1st of each year as World AIDS Day. Although it focused on women this year, emphasizing that women are more likely to be infected with HIV than men, what worries the CDC is the problem of HIV infection among drug addicts in China . Taking the first ten months of this year as an example, the number of people infected with HIV due to sharing needles reached 246, which is 4.6 times the number of 53 people in the same period last year.
Shu Lianwen, Director of the Addiction Prevention and Control Department of the Taipei Municipal Nursing Home, said that the number of people infected with AIDS due to drug use this year alone is almost the sum of the past ten years. Even if the government takes action, the number of drug-addicted AIDS patients will continue to rise in the next one to two years.
It is understood that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is currently actively cooperating with the Chenxi Society, and hopes to set up a rehabilitation center for HIV-infected drug addicts in the mountainous area of Taipei County in the first half of next year. Chenxihui said that although they have many years of experience in providing drug addicts with addiction counseling, HIV-infected people still have diseases that need treatment. In the past, once drug addicts were found to be infected with HIV, they had to be referred to other medical institutions. The established AIDS detoxification village is roughly estimated to accommodate up to fifteen people at a time.
